WM. BAILEY, 65, KILLED BY FRIEGHT TRAIN, FRIDAY MORNING - Accidental Death Verdict Returned by Coroner - Second New Cumberland Resident to be Killed by Train in Past Six Weeks.
William H. Bailey was crushed beneath the wheels of an early morning freight train here Friday (July 28, 1939), the second railway pedestrian fatality at New Cumberland within a few weeks.
The victim was found lying along the Pennsylvania Railroad tracks by 7:20 a.m. by Guy Chamberlain, Jr., who was walking along the tracks on his way up town.
Bailey's abdomen and both legs were severed as the train drug him approximately 40 feet. His body was found about 30 feet from the Harris Street crossing, near D. Rise's shoe repair shop below the station.
Acting Coroner J. H. Beatty, New Cumberland, Justice of the Peace, returned a verdict of accidental death at an inquest in the Bradley Funeral home Friday morning.
Mr. Bailey had been residing with his children since the death of his wife two years ago and was residing with his daughter, Mrs. Esther Webster.
The morning freight train usually passes thru New Cumberland between 1 and 3 a.m. The crew operating the train was the same group on duty when the morning freight struck and fatally injured Frank Whitaker, 21, on June 10. Whittaker died four days later at the East Liverpool Hospital.
The deceased is survived by eight children living. He was born December 20, 1873 and lived here all his life. He was the son of Mrs. Elizabeth (Wolf) Bailey and the late Joseph Bailey.
He is also survived by his mother and three sons, George, Charles and Harry and two daughters, Mrs. Bertha Miller and Mrs. Webster. Seven brothers, Ray, Charles, Benjamin of New Cumberland, Joseph, James and Thomas of Coshocton, OH, ; six sisters Mrs. Carrie Maple and Mrs. Ada Holsinger of Coshocton, Mrs. Lucy Bailey of this place, Mrs. Maude (Amanda) Snowden and Mrs. Sadie (Sarah) Lyons of Ravenna, OH and Mrs. Laurenna Noss of Freedom, PA.
Funeral services were held at the Webster home Sunday afternoon conducted by Rev. Jacob Steinstraw pastor of the M.E. church. Interment in the local cemetery (New Cumberland Cemetery).
