William Baggott

Another of the old pioneer potters has gone, in the death of William Baggott, which occurred Friday morning (July 13, 1900) at half past one o'clock. He had been ill just two weeks, and his death was caused by Bright's disease. He was born in England, October 9th, 1823, and was in his 77th year. He came to this country early in the 40's, with his brother Samuel, and about 1846 engaged in the manufacture of Rockingham and Yellow Ware, buying the pottery of the late John Goodwin, corner of Market and Second street, which they continued to operate up to the time the works were sold to Mountford & Co. Deceased was the only surviving member of the original Baggott family - his brothers and sisters all being dead. He leaves a wife, but no children. He was one of the few remaining potters of the old Rockingham and Yellow Ware class, and was a practical and very successful potter in that line. Deceased has long been one of the active members of St. Stephen's Episcopal church, and in his death the parish loses one of its oldest and best friends. The pastor of this church, Rev. Weary, will conduct the funeral services, and Mrs. Baggott has requested that they be held at the deceased's late home on West Second street, Monday afternoon, at two o'clock. Interment will be at Riverview cemetery.
