WELLSVILLE MAN IS KILLED IN PLANT OF CHAMPION CLAY CO.

Thomas R. Smith, of Wellsville, was killed Monday night (October 16, 1905) by being caught in a shaft in the Champion Clay company's works. His back was broken and several other injuries caused almost instant death.

Mr. Smith was 41 years of age and was unmarried. He leaves two sisters, Mrs. Watson, of 1907 Chester avenue, Wellsville, and Mrs. George Hood of East End, this city, and one brother, Wm. Smith, of Wellsburg. He had lived in Wellsville for about nine years coming to that city from New Matamoras. While in Wellsville he resided with his widowed sister, Mrs. Watson.

He had worked in East Liverpool at the West End brick works for H. C. Wooster, the grocer, and for the electric light company. He was a member in good standing of the Knights of the Golden Eagle, Ohio Valley castle, No. 108, and carried a policy in the General Accident Insurance company. He was also a member of the East Liverpool Turnverein, which order sent a beautiful floral wreath last night to Wellsville as a token of their respect and esteem.

The remains will be taken by the relatives today to the Cooper cemetery, six miles from New Matamoras, and there services will be held. Last evening services were held at the home of his sister at Wellsville.
