ESTEEMED CITIZEN CLAIMED BY DEATH
Thomas R. Cunningham Answers Final Summons at Ten O'Clock
Saturday Evening at His Home in Chester

No death in recent years occasioned so much profound sorrow as that of Thomas R. Cunningham, which occurred at ten o'clock Saturday night (September 30, 1911) at his home in the west end of Chester.

Mr. Cunningham was the oldest living son of the late John Cunningham, for many years one of the substantial farmers of Hancock county. He was a bachelor 69 years of age and on giving up farming pursuits several years ago took up his residence in Chester in the house where he died. Mrs. Samuel Cunningham, wife of a deceased brother, was his housekeeper. He together with a brother and John Gardner were the only three living citizens of Chester that were within the corporate limits at the time of organization.

The deceased is survived by three brothers and one sister; David M., John F., J. C. and Mrs. A. M. Fowler, all of Chester and the immediate neighborhood.

No citizen of Hancock county was held in greater esteem than Thomas Cunningham. He was the soul of honor, and charitable to a fault. He was a member of the Methodist church and a life long Democrat. For several years he conducted a general store in Chester.

Following the death of his parents, Mr. Cunningham acquired the old home farm, one mile form Chester, on the Fairview road, and it was listed among his possessions at the time of his death.

Mr. Cunningham had been in poor health for several months, due to heart trouble and hardening of the arteries. On Saturday morning he was up town doing some shopping, and had returning home had arrived near the residence of Levi Allison when he was seized with a fainting spell. Assisted to his home his death occurred Saturday evening.

The funeral services will be held at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning form the home of his brother, J. C. Cunningham, Rev. Charles Bollinger, pastor of the First M. E. church officiating. Interment will be made in Locust Hill cemetery. The remains may be viewed this evening between 6 and 10 o'clock.
