East Liverpool Tribune
Mrs. Temperance Gaston, aged 68, wife of W. H. Gaston, was called by death at the family home an Sheridan avenue at 11:15 o'clock Sunday morning, (March 12, 1911) following a lengthy illness. Deceased has been in failing health for many years, but during the last illness was confined to her bed but two months. Her death removes from the city one of its most prominent and loved ladies. Having been practically a lifelong resident of East Liverpool, she was surrounded on all sides by those who had recognized her strong personality and had been drawn to her by her many kind and pleasing ways. A prominent church member and Christian worker, she was untiring in her efforts to assist the cause of God.
A daughter of the late John and Mary Anderson, Mrs. Gaston was born September 18, 1843 at Clarkson, O., the youngest of a family of nine children. With her parents, she came to this city in 1852, when East Liverpool was but a small village. She was united in marriage with W. H. Gaston of Clarkson, Nov. 14, 1865, and remained at Clarkson for one year, when with her husband she returned to this city, taking up their residence on Second street. Here they resided until 1875, when they removed to the late home on Sheridan avenue. Deceased was a lifelong member of the First United Presbyterian church, being one of its charter members. She united with the Second church at Calcutta, O., when but thirteen years of age. After the union of the churches and the organization of the U.P. church in East Liverpool, she became one of its most active workers. She was one of the original Crusaders and was active with them in the days when they marched the streets of the city in their fight for the abolishment of the saloons.
Besides her husband, deceased is survived by one brother, Mr. Anderson of West End, this city, and an adopted daughter, Mrs. W. A. Chain, of Chicago.
Funeral services will be held from the late home at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, Rev. H. A. Kelsey, pastor of the First United Presbyterian church officiating. Interment will be made in the Riverview cemetery.
Friends may view the remains between the hours of 7 and 10 tomorrow evening.
