OLDEST HANCOCK WOMAN CLAIMED

Mrs. Sarah Jane Cunningham Taken By Death At 96

Mrs. Sarah Jane Cunningham, 96, believed to have been the oldest resident in Hancock county, died Monday at 4:45 p. m. in her home on Fairview road Chester following an illness attributed to infirmities of old age.

Mrs. Cunningham, a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allison Martin, was born Feb. 23, 1848, on a farm about one and a half miles from what is now the town of Chester. Her father was a steamboat captain on the Ohio river for many years.

She pent her lifetime in upper Hancock county, making her home with her daughter, Miss Myrtle Cunningham. She was married to David Cunningham in September 1868. Mr. Cunningham died in 1922, after they had celebrated their 54th wedding anniversary.

Mrs. Cunningham was a member of the Chester Methodist church.

She was the mother of 10 children, eight daughters and two sons.

She leaves two other daughters, Mrs. Wilda Kirkwood and Mrs. Amy Musselman of Chester, and one son, John Cunningham of Grafton, W. Va.; three sisters, Mrs. R. E. Allison, Mrs. T. B. Allison and Mrs. Martha Babb, all of Chester, and nine grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. in the late home by Rev. Ray Thompson, pastor of the Chester Methodist Church. Burial will be in Locust Hill cemetery.

The body will be removed tonight from the Stewart funeral home in Hookstown, to the late home where friends may call.
