John Henry Mountford
John H. Mountford, one of East Liverpool's best known citizens, died at 6:45 Tuesday evening at this home at 203 Second street. The news of his demise was received with deepest regret throughout the city. Mr. Mountford's illness dates back to New Years day when he was attacked by heart trouble. He recently went to Mt. Clemens, Mich., for his health, but soon returned unimproved. He was compelled to take to his bed last Sunday and his condition rapidly grew worse until he breathed his last.
John Henry Mountford was universally esteemed in the community, and was beloved by his employees. He was born in Burslem, Staffordshire, Eng., February 13, 1845. He came to the United States in May, 1860, locating in Youngstown, where he engaged in the coal business. A year later he was married at Sharon, Pa., to Miss Sarah Robinson, to whom he was betrothed in England and who came to this country after Mr. Mountford did.
Mr. Mountford removed to East Liverpool almost twenty years ago, and, with John Rowe - now of Zanesville - established a stilt works just south of the C. & P. tracks between lower Union and Washington streets. About 12 years ago Messrs. Mountford and Rowe built an addition to their works and began the manufacture of hotel china.
Several years later Mr. Rowe retired from the firm, his interests being purchased by Ambrose Massey and Thomas Robinson. Then the production of a general line of white ware was begun. Three years ago Mr. Mountford sold his interest in the concern to George C. Murphy and later purchased the old Baggot pottery at Second and Market streets, which he completely remodeled and in which he began manufacturing potters supplies. He was engaged in this business at the time of his death.
Deceased had been very successful in his various business enterprises. Surviving are a wife and seven children, as follows: Two sons, William and John P., and Misses Lizzie, Clara and Hannay and Mrs. Sarah, wife of Frank McNutt, and Mrs. Helen, wife of F. Leslie Trump. One daughter, Florence, died in 1884.
Two brothers and two sisters, all residents of Youngstown, also survive. - Thomas and William Mountford and Mrs. Elizabeth Bailey and Mrs. Thomas Hewitt. Deceased was a member of East Liverpool lodge No. 258, B. P. O. Elks and Ohio Valley Ruling No. re, Fraternal Mystic Circle. The funeral took place at 2 p.m. Thursday from the house. The Elks attended in a body.
