Hugh Martin

An aged veteran of the Civil War, died at his home on Broadway, Monday morning (August 19, 1901) at an early hour, from the effects of a paralytic stroke. He leaves a widow, two daughters and one son. He had a series of strokes Saturday night, when word was sent to his son, James Martin, a druggist at Fairmont, W. Va. He arrived Sunday evening before his father died. The deceased has been an inmate of the Soldier's home, Dayton, for several years, and was home on furlough. About ten days before his death the publisher of the Tribune wrote to the adjutant of the home, and secured an extension of his furlough. Little did the writer think that he was having it extended for eternity for this old soldier and friend. It was quite a comfort to his family to have him at home with them all the last few weeks he had on earth. His funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, and the escort was composed of boys who wore the blue. Rev. Taggart had charge of the service.
