H. A. GIBBS DIED AT AKRON
A FORMER WELL KNOWN EAST LIVERPOOL MAN PASSES AWAY.
WAS A PIONEER POTTER.
Formerly of This City, Now a Pottery Manufacturer at Akron, Died at the Age of 68 Years Wednesday Afternoon.
The friends in this city will be grieved to learn of the death of Henry Alfred Gibbs, a former resident of this city, at his home in Akron, at 3 o'clock Wednesday afternoon. Deceased was 68 years of age and was one of the early residents of the city. He had been ailing for the past year and death was the result of a complication of diseases.
Mr. Gibbs was a potter by trade and for a number of years was employed at the knob works of William Brunt, sr., at the plant that is now known as the George F. Brunt works. Some 30 years ago Mr. Gibs removed from this city with his family to Akron and accepted a position in Robinson Bros. pottery at that place. The owners of the Akron pottery also went to that city from here.
After several years working at the bench in Akron Mr. Gibbs embarked in the pottery business on his own account and built the Ohio Stoneware Pottery Co. plant, of which organization he was president at the time of his death, having associated with him his sons. He was also interested in several of the large sewer pipe concerns of Akron.
For a number of years the deceased had taken no active part in the management of any of the plants in which he was interested being compelled to seek the restoration of his health. He had spent each winter at a home he purchased in Florida.
Mr. Gibbs was one of the leading members of the first cornet band that was organized in this city. He was also one of the charter members of the East Liverpool lodge of Odd Fellows and continued his membership in the lodge. At the opening of the war he enlisted from this city in Co. A, O. V. I., and served as a bugler for three years in that regiment. He was a member of Gen. Lyon post No. 44, G. A. R., of this city.
Prior to leaving this city Mr. Gibbs was married to Mrs. Eliza Parker. He is survived by a widow and two sons, Harry H., and Edward H. Gibbs, and two step-children, George A. Parker and Mrs. Charles Chapman, all of Akron. Four sister-in-laws of the deceased reside in this city - Mrs. Isaias olclough, Mrs. Emma Wilson, Mrs. Mattie Neville and Mrs. Anna Bullock.
The arrangements for the funeral service had not been made at the time of going to press, but it is expected that there will be a number of friends and relatives in attendance from this city.
(Note - died on Sept 17, 1902)
