KILLED BY THE CARS

TERRIBLE DEATH OF A WEST VIRGINIA ATTORNEY

STEUBENVILLE, June 21 - Dr. G. W. Caldwell, a prominent attorney and citizen of Wellsburg, W. Va., was struck by a Panhandle passenger train near Wheeling Junction this afternoon, and killed instantly, having the back portion of his head crushed in a terrible manner. The Doctor was in company with Mr. T. S. Brown, also an attorney living at Wellsburg, at the time of the accident, and both gentlemen had been to Holliday's Cove, looking up some testimony to be used in the McWha-Baker tragedy, for which Van Baker will probably be tried the coming week. After finishing their business both gentlemen concluded to walk to the Junction in order to catch the afternoon train for Wellsburg, and while walking down the railroad on different tracks, the express came around a curve, and before Mr. Caldwell could get off, the engine struck him. His remains were shipped to his home in Wellsburg.

Mr. Caldwell was about 55 years of age and well known throughout this section. In former years he practiced medicine, but of late years had been in the successful practice of law. He leaves a large family.
