Death Seen as Homicide By Coroner
Charles Adams, 29, Claimed After Fight Outside Of Tavern
Prosecuting Atty: J. Warren J. Warren Bettis indicated today at Lisbon
he will recall the January Grand Jury to consider manslaughter charges
against Chester Ice Jr., 28, of 2212 Ohio Ave., in connection with the
death of Charles J. Adams, 29, of Harvey Ave., after a fight Saturday
night outside the Bar-X-Tavern on the Y&O Rd.
Mr. Adams died at 9:25 p.m. in the emergency room at City Hospital of
multiple compound fractures of the skull and severe lacerations of the
face. Dr. William Kolozi of Salem, county coroner, ruled his death was a
homicide.
Deputy James R. Gause headed the investigation for the office of Sheriff
Russell J. Van Fossen.
Authorities said Ice and Mr. Adams engaged in an argument inside the
tavern then went outside into the parking lot. In the fight which
allegedly ensued, Mr. Adams was injured. He was removed to the hospital
in an ambulance after he had been carried inside the tavern.
Authorities said Ice left the tavern in an auto with some friends.
The prosecutor said he will ask the Grand Jury to determine what degree
of manslaughter should be charged against the defendant if it returns an
indictment.
Authorities said Ice and some companions drove to Beaver Falls after the
fight at the tavern. A description of the suspect was sent to all area
police departments, including the East Liverpool department, which
checked with Ice's brother.
Authorities said Ice returned from Pennsylvania about 2 or 3 a.m.,
Sunday and went to the home of a brother.
Ice surrendered himself voluntarily to the local police department and
then was turned over to the custody of the sheriff's department.
A native of East Liverpool, Mr. Adams was born May 11, 1936, the son of
Clarence Adams and Helen Buchanan Adams who reside in East Liverpool.
He was employed as a scarfer in the blooming mill of the Midland Works
of the Crucible Steel Co. He was a member of the Steelworkers Local 1212
and the Moose Lodge 122.
In addition to his parents he leaves his widow, Mrs. Barbara Eileen
Adams, a daughter, Alice Leanna Adams, and twins, Charleen Helen Adams
and Charles Allen Adams, all at home; three sisters, Mrs. Deloris
Rodgers and Mrs. Ruth Dalrymple, both of East Liverpool, and Mrs. Norma
Rodgers of Hammondsville; a brother, Clarence George Adams of Toronto,
and the paternal grandmother, Mrs. Bertha Adams of Warren.
Services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Dawson Funeral Home by
the Rev. Arthur Williams, pastor of the Pennsylvania Ave. Methodist
Church. Burial will be in Columbiana Memorial Park.
