LITTLE BESSIE IS STILL ALIVE

The Hargreaves Child, Injured By a Street Car, Resting Well Today.

BOTH HANDS AMPUTATED

The Sufferer Says She Does Not Wish to Live And is Praying for Death. Little Hope of Her Ultimate Recovery.

Little Bessie Hargreaves, who was the victim of the terrible street railway accident yesterday, is still alive. The child's hands were amputated yesterday afternoon, but it will not be necessary to cut off the injured leg. It was broken just above the ankle, and though the member was badly crushed, it can be saved.

Early this morning the little girl was taken with convulsions, but a physician gave her immediate relief and she did not suffer much unnecessary pain. Many friends of the family have visited the little sufferer, and it is the wonder of all how she has borne up under her affliction. Last evening little Bessie called a sister to her side, and forgetting for a moment that her hands were cut off, she reached up to throw her arms around her neck. The elder sister was crying, but the suffering child told her not to cry, saying: "I do not wish to live, and am praying to God to take me to Him."

Though she has been resting easily today, the doctors have little hope of her recovery. The parents are heartbroken, as are also the brothers and sisters of the unfortunate child.

The street railway company had a force of men at work last night stringing wire from the power house to the Hargreaves home on Pennsylvania avenue, and an electric fan attached for the benefit of the little sufferer.

DEATH CAME TO GIVE HER RELIEF

Little Bessie Hargreaves Passed Away at 4 O'Clock Yesterday Afternoon.

LAST REQUEST GRANTED

The Child Had Been Unconscious All Day And the End Was Peaceful. The Family Was at the Bedside. Funeral Arrangements Completed.

Death came to the relief of little Bessie Hargreaves yesterday afternoon shortly before 4 o'clock. The little one's dying wish was that she might die, and though her parents are almost distracted there is solace in the realization that their child's own desire has been gratified and that she has thus been saved from all earthly trials, which had she lived in her crippled condition would, indeed, have been hard to bear.

Dr. E. L. Trimmer was at the child's bedside when the end came. Ever since the deplorable accident he has been in almost constant attendance upon the little sufferer, and did all in his power to relieve her. Death came peacefully. When it became known that she was dying the parents, brothers and sisters, together with many friends of the family, were at the bedside.

Not even a tremor or moan gave indication of pain, and little Bessie's spirit took its flight almost before those about her had realized it. She had been unconscious since 5 o'clock yesterday morning and failed to regain her senses sufficiently to recognize her surroundings.

Bessie Hargreaves was one of the most beloved children in the community in which her parents resided. Since the time of the accident scores of sympathizing friends and acquaintances have called at the Hargreaves' home. To all of them Bessie spoke alike, expressing her desire to go home to her Maker. She was a favorite with her playmates, who will miss her almost as much as the grief-stricken parents.

Funeral services will be conducted at the late home on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. Revs. J. R. Greene and N. M. Crowe officiating. Interment will be made at Riverview.

THE LAST OF EARTH

Little Bessie Hargreaves, Killed By a Car, Given an Impressive Funeral.

The funeral of little Bessie Hargreaves took place at the late home at 2 o'clock this afternoon, Rev. J. R. Greene officiating. Rev. N. M. Crowe had also been asked to assist with the services but on account of a previous engagement he was absent from the city. The funeral was largely attended and there were many beautiful floral tributes.

The street railway employees presented a most beautiful design representing "the Gates Ajar" which was made up of various flowers, roses and carnations predominating.
