Heart Attack Hits Suddenly

Death Takes A. W. Shields, Salineville Superintendent

Arthur W. Shields, Salineville school superintendent for 17 years, died Sunday (July 7, 1957) at about 5 p. m. in an ambulance en route to City Hospital after suffering a sudden heart attack a few minutes earlier at his home. He was 64.

Mr. Shields was stricken a short time after he and his wife returned from a visit in Cleveland with their daughter, Miss Marjorie Shields, who is a student this summer at Western Reserve University.

Mr. Shields had been superintendent of the Salineville Exempted Village School District since 1940, climax of a career in education that dated back 40 years. The family home is at 2 Academy Ave., Salineville.

Mr. Shields was born Oct. 12, 1892, in Alegheny County, a son of Samuel Shields and Sadie Shields. He was a graduate of Grove City College at Grove City, Pa., and Ohio State University. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge at Wellington, Ohio, the County Education Association and the County Schoolmaster's Club.

Mr. Shield's career started in 1913, when he was named a principal in the school system at Brighton, Ohio. From Brighton, he went to Wellington, where he served first as principal and later as superintendent. He left Wellington to take the Salineville post.

In addition to the daughter, Mr. Shields leaves his widow, Mrs. Hazel Shields, at home; two brothers, Mirl Shields of Mount Lebanon and John Shields of Waynesburg and two sisters, Mrs. V. D. Cronister of Bishopville, S. C., and Miss Evelyn Shields of Portsmouth, Va.

Services will be conducted Tuesday at 1 p. m. in the Kerr Funeral Home at Salineville by the Rev. E. E. Bacon of the Presbyterian Church assisted by Rev. William Catlin of the United Presbyterian Church.

The body will then be taken to the Truman Funeral Home at Wellington, where services will be held Wednesday at 2 p. m. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery at Wellington.

Friends may call after 3 p. m. today at the Kerr Funeral Home and Tuesday night and Wednesday morning at the Truman Funeral Home.

Salineville business establishments will be closed tomorrow afternoon between 1 and 2 in memory of Supt. Shields, according to Mayor Karl Lindner.
